Wuhan lab origin of Covid-19 ‘seems to make sense’, Trump says as Dr. Fauci douses cold water on ‘man-made virus’ conspiracy

Published Monday, April 20, 2020 @ 10:20 EST by BIAFRA TODAY
Chinese Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump

A top expert on the White House Covid-19 task force shot down the notion that the coronavirus was created in a Chinese lab, arguing the theory is not backed by science, as the US president continues to blame Beijing regardless.
Asked about the possibility that the lethal pathogen was “man-made” in a laboratory at Friday’s White House briefing, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a leading member of the task force, brushed the speculative theory aside, stating the coronavirus in all likelihood passed naturally from animals to humans.
"The mutations that it took to get to the point where it is now are totally consistent with a jump of a species from an animal to a human."
Fauci’s brief exchange with reporters comes as President Donald Trump is increasingly pressed for a direct answer whether the virus “emerged” from a lab in Wuhan, China. Previously stating that the White House is looking into the broader origins of the coronavirus, including the ‘lab’ theory, Trump weighed in further on Friday, saying: “We’re looking at it. A lot of people are looking at it. It seems to make sense.”
“They talk about a certain kind of bat, but that bat wasn’t in that area... that bat wasn’t sold in that wet zone,” the president said, casting doubt on whether the virus was passed to humans at Wuhan’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market.
"So a lot of strange things are happening, but there’s a lot of investigation going on and we’re going to find out."
A number of recent reports have breathed life into the conspiracy theory that the coronavirus escaped from the high-security Wuhan Institute of Virology, with Fox News and the Washington Post running stories this week lending credibility to the idea through mostly anonymous government sources.
Though a number of experts have tentatively placed Covid-19’s ground zero in Wuhan, the scientific verdict is still out on the question, with one recent study led by the University of Cambridge concluding the virus may have emerged elsewhere.

“If I am pressed for an answer, I would say the original spread started more likely in southern China than in Wuhan,” Cambridge geneticist Peter Forster said, adding that concrete proof “can only come from analyzing more bats.”
As proponents of the competing theories duke it out in scientific journals and internet comment sections, the White House has stepped up a rhetorical assault on Beijing in recent weeks, with Trump repeatedly accusing the country of concealing information in the early stages of its outbreak. The president also turned his wrath to the World Health Organization (WHO), freezing the agency’s funding while claiming it abetted the Chinese “cover-up,” though he has yet to offer evidence for the allegation.

The novel coronavirus may have first passed to humans somewhere in southern China months before the outbreak in the city of Wuhan, a new study found, cutting against widely held theories about the origins of the pandemic.
Mapping a “network” of coronavirus genomes and tracing mutations over time, a team of researchers led by a Cambridge University geneticist determined the first Covid-19 infection may have come as early as September in a region south of Wuhan, noting the pathogen could have been carried by humans well before it mutated into a more lethal form.
“The virus may have mutated into its final ‘human-efficient’ form months ago, but stayed inside a bat or other animal or even human for several months without infecting other individuals,” geneticist Peter Forster told the South China Morning Post. He leads the ongoing yet to be peer-reviewed research, recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.
"Then, it started infecting and spreading among humans between September 13 and December 7, generating the network we present in [the study]."

Though the virus is thought to have transmitted from bats to another host animal – pangolins are a popular candidate – and finally to humans, the new findings could overturn prevailing ideas as to precisely how, when and where it made the interspecies leap. Initial theories posited the jump to humans took place at a wet market in Wuhan, but the new study has called that into question, suggesting Covid-19 might have originated south of the central-Chinese city.

Any solid conclusions, however, could only be made after analyzing more bats and other potential host animals, as well as tissue samples from early patients, Forster cautioned.
“But it is the best assumption we can make at the moment, pending analysis of further patient samples stored in hospitals during 2019,” the researcher told Newsweek in a separate interview.
As questions swirl about the origins of the pandemic, a number of controversial theories have gained prominence recently, with several major US media outlets running stories this week suggesting the virus may have escaped a maximum-security virology lab in Wuhan. Though US President Donald Trump has yet to endorse the claim outright, he said the White House is currently looking into the idea, all the while blaming Beijing for the global health crisis. Trump has repeatedly accused the country of a “cover-up” in the early stages of its outbreak, insisting the World Health Organization conspired to help Chinese officials conceal information.

The United States Government has indicted the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS) over the 2019 general elections.

The US government in a report released on Wednesday by the Department of State, also said it has evidence that the Army and the DSS intimidated voters, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and even election observers during the general elections, concluding that this fueled the impression that the Army worked for the success of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls.

The report, the 2019 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices in Nigeria, also noted that the Nigerian judiciary was still susceptible to intimidation by the executive and the legislative arms of government, contending that there was corruption in the judiciary, which made it not to be able to function independently.

“During the year (2019) INEC conducted the presidential election, National Assembly elections, state House Assembly elections, and local elections in all 36 states plus the FCT, as well as governorship elections in 30 states.

“There was evidence military and security services intimidated voters, electoral officials, and election observers. Also, violence in several states contributed to lower voter participation and added to the sentiment the army is a tool of the ruling party in many parts of the country, particularly in the South.

“For example, widespread violence and military involvement in electoral processes, including during the vote collation process, significantly scarred the governorship election in Rivers State. Additionally, several of INEC’s resident electoral commissioners reported DSS operatives intimidated them when the RECs attempted to protect voting materials. Some RECs reported security service personnel visited them multiple times before the elections.

“There were reports that corruption, including vote-buying, were historically high during the 2018-19 electoral season. Examples of vote-buying were apparent in the re-run of the Osun (State) gubernatorial election in September 2018, and during the Kano (State) gubernatorial election on March 9 (2019)”, the report stated.

On the judiciary, the US contended that it has been unable to function optimally due to executive and legislative intimidation as well as corruption, adding that court officials were also poorly paid thereby making them susceptible to manipulation.

The US said: “Although the constitution and law provide for an independent judiciary, the judicial branch remained susceptible to pressure from the executive and legislative branches. Political leaders influenced the judiciary, particularly at the state and local levels.

“Understaffing, underfunding, inefficiency, and corruption prevented the judiciary from functioning adequately. There are no continuing education requirements for attorneys, and police officers were often assigned to serve as prosecutors. Judges frequently failed to appear for trials. In addition, the salaries of court officials were low, and they often lacked proper equipment and training.

“There was a widespread public perception that judges were easily bribed and litigants could not rely on the courts to render impartial judgments.
“The constitution and law provide for an independent judiciary in civil matters, but the executive and legislative branches, as well as business interests, exerted influence and pressure in civil cases. Official corruption and lack of will to implement court decisions also interfered with due process.”

Highlighting the high rate of human rights abuse perpetrated by security agents against journalists, rights groups and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, the US Government said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government had not taken action against any of the military officials that killed over 300 Shiites in 2015.

The US explained the aspect of the panel of enquiry set up by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State that indicted military officers in the killing of Shi’ites in the state had not been implemented though the recommendation for IMN’s proscription had been implemented.

“As of September (2019), there were no reports of the Federal Government further investigating or holding individuals accountable for the 2015 killing and subsequent mass burial of members of a Shia political organization, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, and other civilians by Nigerian Army forces in Zaria, Kaduna State.

“A 2016 report by the government of Kaduna State included acceptance of the commission’s recommendation to investigate and prosecute allegations of excessive and disproportionate use of force by the Nigerian Army. As of September, there was no indication that authorities had held any members of the NA accountable for the events in Zaria”, the report further stated.

On the state of the prisons in Nigeria, the US Government noted that conditions in prison and detention centers remained harsh and life-threatening.

“Prisoners and detainees reportedly were subjected to gross overcrowding, inadequate medical care, food and water shortages, and other abuses; some of these conditions resulted in deaths”, the report stated.

BREAKING: UN Ambassador to U.S Nikki Haley Resigns, Trump accepts her resignation

United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley

United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley has resigned, the latest departure from President Donald Trump's national security circle, a senior White House official said Tuesday.
The former South Carolina governor had served since January 2017. The reason for her departure was not immediately clear, and the official did not comment on what led to her resignation.
Haley has represented the Trump administration at the UN amid several international crises, including efforts to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program and ease conflict in Syria.
She walked past reporters in the White House on Tuesday morning but did not comment. Trump then tweeted that he would have a "big announcement" with Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30 a.m. ET.
Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30am.
Haley is only the latest high profile Trump foreign policy official to leave the administration. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and two national security advisors, Michael Flynn and H.R. McMaster, all served only brief stints.

Ethics groups had recently requested an investigation into Haley over whether she inappropriately accepted flights from South Carolina businessmen.

Living A Fulfilled Life Outside Nigeria Orchestrated By UN Referendum For Biafra

Biafrans rally n London during #FreeNnamdiKanu campaign

Comr. FELIX C ONYEMACHI
For IPOB Writers Press

It is becoming more obvious that things are no longer at ease in Nigeria and Biafra independence is overdue. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been conducting its campaign for the independence of Biafra in a non-violent manner. However, despite the group’s non-violent posture, the Nigerian government and its security agencies have mindlessly killed, maimed, arrested, detained and prosecuted several Pro-Biafra agitators over the years. Until Biafran people are granted freedom, things will continue to go wrong in Nigeria.

The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 15 states that “everyone has the right to a nationality and that no one should be arbitrarily deprived of a nationality or denied the right to change nationality”. The United Nations Charter on Self-determination is a universal right and the people of Biafra have the right to leave the colonial union called Nigeria.

In view of the above information, it can be gathered that Referendum is a peaceful approach adopted by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to actualize Biafra and this is the only legal approach for the recognition of a secessionist state by the International community. The Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) quest for self-determination is lawful
and finds justification in Article 1(2) of the United Nation’s Charter of Human and People’s Rights to which Nigeria is a signatory which recognizes the right for self-determination. Under United Nation Charter, “all forms of amalgamation and forceful takeover of indigenous land were to expire after a hundred years”. Therefore, the amalgamation of Nigeria was void by the 1st of January 2014.

The question that remains to be answered is why are Biafran people agitating for self-determination? The entire people of Biafra have been economically, politically and socially marginalized in Nigeria. They took our positions in the military, police, air-Force, civil- Defense, Navy, etc. The Nigerian government systematically introduces policies that make Biafra businesses to crumble. They grasped our resources and made a law that makes it impossible for Biafrans to build their roads.  They kill our youths in a little provocation, millions of our people have died and thousands are still dying.

They chased out our mothers and fathers in their own farm by raping and killing them in the name of Fulani-killer herdsmen. They gave us quit notice, they killed our boys in all oil producing regions. They annihilated the whole Odi Community and nobody raised an eyebrow. They introduce all kinds of military killing parades, in our land like “Operation Python dance”, “Operation Crocodile Smile”, and many of them to keep us in fear day and night. Our military men are retired without accomplishing their dreams. They beheaded our sister for preaching the gospel and paraded her head on TV, and their court discharged and acquitted the killers. How many do l list and how many will l forget? If l continue to list the atrocities committed by Nigerian governments against the Biafrans, day will break.

The current Nigeria leadership under President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to protect and defend the Fundamental Human Rights of Biafrans. Biafrans are under siege in their homeland, Biafra, by Nigerian security forces and Islamic jihadist as a result of which Biafran peoples’ lives, properties and means of livelihood are in mortal peril. Biafrans are targets of ethnic cleansing in the present day Nigeria simply because they are Biafrans. Many Biafrans have claimed in the past to be Nigerians believing and hoping that such claim would guarantee them safety from harassment and from being targets of premeditated mass murders but this claim has not brought any respite to their predicament.
As a result of Nigerian State sponsored acts of violence and terrorism against the Indigenous People of Biafra, acts which consistently target and murder Biafrans with impunity with none held accountable, millions of young Biafrans have escaped to other countries all over the world looking for safety away from their fatherland.

The underground secret detention facilities of the Nigerian secret police (SSS) are filled with Biafra citizens held incommunicado under degrading and inhuman conditions without being prosecuted for committing any crime whatsoever. About 112 IPOB Women were arrested, tortured and charged for treasonable felony on the 17th of August, 2018 by the Nigerian Police Force. Their crime was that the women took to the streets of Owerri, the Imo state capital, to protest the disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Last June, 2017, Buhari tacitly endorsed a Hausa-Fulani threat to expel by force and violence and to plunder 11 million Igbos in twelve northern Nigerian states that have adopted Sharia as their legal codes if they did not abandon their Igbo homes and businesses by October 1, 2017.  During the past few years in northern Nigeria, Hausa-Fulani terrorists have destroyed thousands of churches and religious schools and displaced millions of Christian Biafrans.

On the 14th of September, 2017, a courageous and influential Biafran leader, Nnamdi Kanu, had his home attacked and quarantined by the Nigerian army and his followers killed.  Grisly videos and photos taken at scenes of the harrowing crimes are conclusive.  What they prove amounts to state terrorism—the systematic employment of violence to intimidate or coerce a civilian population. Unfortunately, no actions taken to bring to book all the military personnel involved in the bombardment of the home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

There is an adage in my place which says, “it is only a person that wears a shoe knows where it pinches him or her”. The Biafran people have been perpetually deprived of freedom by the Nigerian government and it is only they that know and experience the pains of freedom deprivation. In this case, Biafrans cannot wait for Nigeria's parliament to initiate a referendum on their behalf. Again, having understood the composition of the Nigerian parliament, majority of which emanate from the Northern part of Nigeria, there is no way the parliament can speak in favour of Biafra referendum. And this is the reason why this statement was credited to IPOB leadership, “We Biafrans in pursuit of our inalienable, irreducible and God-given right to restore our stolen sovereignty do hereby state that we do not require the permission of the Nigerian State or her government officials to grant us our natural freedom”.

I am indebted to world leaders who have shown their sympathies for the oppressive and subjective economic policies of Buhari-led Nigerian government against the industrious and creative people of Biafra. In view of the above mentioned atrocities committed by the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, there is, therefore, an urgent need for UN to organise a referendum for the people of Biafra.

It is worth mentioning that the presence of both National and International UN monitoring observers are required during Biafra referendum. They would be required to carry out the following tasks:

a. Both national and international observers/ should be given the widest possible opportunity to participate in a referendum observation exercise.

b. Observation must not be confined to Election Day itself but must include the referendum campaign and, where appropriate, the voter registration period and the signature collection period. It must make it possible to determine whether irregularities occurred before, during or after the vote. It must always be possible during vote counting.

c. Observers should be able to go everywhere where operations connected with the referendum are taking place (for example, vote counting and verification). The places where observers are not entitled to be present should be clearly specified by law, with the reasons for their being banned.

d. Observation should cover respect by the authorities of their duty of neutrality.

It is now obvious that the people of Biafra are not wanted in the Nigerian Federation but the presence of Oil located in the Biafra land is what is temporarily binding the two different countries together. It is, therefore, IPOB's determination to restore Biafra Republic where its people will have greater freedom and accommodation.

The Biafrans are always the victims of every religion riots in Nigeria. In 2015, a total of 150 Indigenous People of Biafra were slaughtered by Boko Haram infiltrated Nigeria Army (Amnesty International). From 2010 to 2017, more than 3000 Biafrans were massacred, raped and buried alive by the Federal government of Nigeria sponsored Fulani Terrorist Herdsmen. The question that remains to be answered is: for how long shall my people continue to suffer untimely death from the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria? There is, therefore, an urgent need for the UN to organise a referendum that would see every Biafran become liberated from the perpetual bondage of the Nigerian government.

Biafra: The urgent need of addressing the referendum for a Biafran state

Biafrans Gather outside the Vatican with flags

By Nana Victor Maxwell Odum

It has been very clear to all and sundry around the world that the Nigerian State and its British Slave Masters have committed Heinous Crimes against the Biafra State Starting from the Creation of the Nigerian state down to the Genocidal War orchestrated on Biafrans from 1967 to 1970, spearheaded by Britain and their Marauding Hausa/Fulani willing tools, and up till today, Biafrans are still going through agony, subjugation, ethnic cleansing and religious pogroms in the hands of the Nigerian State.

Fortunately, for Biafra and Biafrans, there has been a Clarion Call for the Restoration of Biafra by the Indigenous People of Biafra {IPOB}, whose Supreme Leader in the Person of Citizen Nnamdi Kanu is still missing up till date due to the Invasion of his Abode in Afaraukwu Ibeku Umuahia, Biafra Land, by the Monstrous Nigeria Military under the auspices of Muhammadu Buhari  the Military Dictator occupying the Nigerian Seat of Power.

This Clarion Call for the restoration of Biafra has made the Nigerian State to Unleash Mayhem on Biafrans ranging from Abducting and Incarcerating Biafrans, Killing of Biafrans: for example, Every Man or woman of good conscience can attest to the authenticity of the Viral Videos and Pictorial Shreds of evidence of Biafrans Being Butchered in their Numbers During Series of their Peaceful Protests all over Biafra Land. At this point, one begins to wonder why the International Communities and Bodies like  United Nations, European Union, Amnesty International, I.C.C and African Union decided to keep Mute over the Heinous Crimes that are meted against Biafrans.

The Biafrans being a Peace-Loving People have resorted to the use of Diplomacy in the Restoration of the Biafra State by asking for a United Nations-monitored Referendum in order to decide their fate, whether to remain in the Nigerian State or to have a Free and Independent Biafra State.

Biafrans are asking for a United Nations Monitored Referendum as quick as possible with the following reasons below:

To enable the Biafrans have their own country, live like human beings and not like second-class citizens or even third-class citizens of the world.

To enable Biafrans to exploit their God-given Resources, Man Power and Intelligence in order to build their future and the future of their generations unborn in their own independent country

To avert another Genocide against Biafrans which has already started taking place against the Biafrans in Biafra Land

To Restore the Lost Dignity of Biafrans who are scattered all over the world and bring them back to their ancestral land.

These and many more reasons are why the International bodies, especially, the United Nations, need to call for an Immediate Monitored Referendum in order to make sure that the Biafrans decide their fate because a stitch in time saves Nine

"ICC has no legitimacy or jurisdiction"- Donald Trump

US President Donald J. Trump speaks at the UN General Assembly

US President Donald Trump used a speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday to accuse the International Criminal Court of lacking any legitimacy, saying it violated “all principles of justice.”

“As far as America is concerned, the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy, and no authority,” Trump said of the world court.

“The ICC claims near-universal jurisdiction over the citizens of every country, violating all principles of justice, fairness, and due process. We will never surrender America’s sovereignty to an unelected, unaccountable global bureaucracy.”

Meanwhile, Trump, whose political ascent has been full of firsts, on Tuesday achieved the rare feat of bringing laughter to the solemn UN General Assembly.

Delivering his address to the annual gathering of UN heads of state, Trump began in the hyperbolic style of a domestic campaign as he boasted of his record.

“In less than two years, my administration has achieved more than any administration in the history of our country,” Trump boasted, little more than a month before US congressional elections.

As assembled global dignitaries started to chuckle, Trump interrupted his prepared remarks and insisted, “So true.”

With the laughter audible, Trump smiled and said, “I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s okay.”

He proceeded to tout low US unemployment before proceeding with the rest of his address, a hardline defence of the US right to act on its own without bowing to global rules.

Trump urged international pressure against Iran, after he annoyed European allies by withdrawing from an agreement on curbing Tehran’s nuclear program, and lashed out at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries over oil prices and China over the imbalance in trade.

Light moments are exceedingly unusual in the UN General Assembly, which follows a strict protocol in with each world leader is escorted to the rostrum for an address on issues of the day.

In 2015, Zimbabwe’s then 91-year-old strongman Robert Mugabe was met with laughter when he shouted “We are not gays!,” part of his longstanding insistence that homosexuality is non-African.

World leaders mock Buhari over anti-corruption speech at UN summit

- Notified him of his incompetent government, massive corruption

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says climate change remains one of the greatest challenges faced by the West African region.

According to him, it has intensified poverty, terrorism and other vices in the region.

The President said this on Tuesday, during the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York.

He said, “Climate change remains one of the greatest challenges of our time.

“Very close to us at home, it is our lot in Nigeria, together with our neighbours around the Chad Basin to live with the climate change consequences of a drastically shrunk Lake Chad and the patching up of otherwise fertile arable land.

“The lake was a major source of livelihood to more than 45 million inhabitants of the region.
FXChoice
“It’s shrinking meant loss of livelihood and they are now rendered poor and vulnerable to the activities of extremists and terrorist groups.

“The instability it has caused in the subregion, intensified internal displacement, among other consequences to intense economic competition especially between farmers and herdsmen”.

He urged world leaders to end global conflicts, support his anti-corruption war in Nigeria. this comment was greeted with grin looks in the hall as world leaders knew Buhari's administration is the most corrupt and least competent government the country has ever seen, No doubt Buhari's administration has plunged the country's economy twice into recession.

World leaders also recognized that crimes, killings, hunger, and poverty is at all time high since he took over power in 2015 and he has failed in his "Change" promise and has obviously failed to curb the evil menace of the Fulani herdsmen killing Christians in the middle belt of the country.

The President, therefore, called on the international bodies to join the government in finding solutions to the root causes of the menace.

UN Blasts Nigeria for failing to tackle human trafficking

The United Nations on Monday criticised Nigeria for failing to tackle human trafficking after a human rights mission looked at efforts to stamp out the organized trade in people.

“What is being done is not enough,” the world body’s special rapporteur on the subject, Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, told reporters at the end of an eight-day visit.

v Some 18,000 Nigerians arrived in Italy via the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa in 2017, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The number of arrivals in Europe fell sharply in the first six months of this year but Giammarinaro said there was “no indication of a decrease in the trafficking trend”.

“Some are already recruited by their traffickers in the country of origin, others may start their migration journey voluntarily,” she told a news conference in Abuja.

“Due also to the absence of safe and regular migration channels, the vast majority of them fall prey to traffickers in transit countries, especially in Libya, and (are) subject to all forms of human rights violations including torture, rape, extortion, and exploitation amounting to trafficking, slavery and forced labour.”

According to the latest IOM figures, some 36,000 Nigerians were stuck in Libya or neighbouring Niger in December last year.

Nigeria’s own immigration service has estimated that about 10,000 nationals died in the Sahara desert or in the Mediterranean Sea between January and May last year.

Giammarinaro noted that human trafficking in Nigeria was not always north towards Europe but also to the Gulf, Russia and southern Africa “mainly for the purposes of sexual and labour exploitation”.

The West African nation is equally an immigration destination for neighbouring countries.

Nigeria has its own anti-trafficking agency but Giammarinaro said there was an overall “lack of resources, training and equipment for the various public offices involved in the fight against trafficking”.

FXChoice
“Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer and ranks sixth in the world, with 2.5 million barrels of oil produced every day.

“Yet… 64 percent of Nigerians live below the poverty line and trafficking in persons continues unabated.

“With the wealth and political leverage it has been generating, the government of Nigeria cannot be seen to leave its people behind.”

Giammarinaro recommended that more work needed to be done to prevent people leaving in the first place and also to bring those responsible to justice.

A total of 362 traffickers have been convicted and sentenced since 2004 yet the number of victims and complaints received has skyrocketed to 13,186.

“But there is no estimate about the real dimension of trafficking in this country,” she added.

Former U.N. chief and Nobel peace laureate Kofi Annan dies aged 80

Late Former UN Secretary General Kofi Anan

ACCRA/GENEVA (Reuters) - Former U.N. Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kofi Annan died on Saturday at the age of 80, his foundation said, after decades of championing efforts to try to end protracted conflicts in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

After rising through the ranks of the United Nations, Annan served two terms as U.N. Secretary-General in New York from 1997-2006 and retired to live in a Swiss village in the Geneva countryside. His 10-year-old foundation promotes good governance and the transformation of African agriculture.

“In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations. He rose through the ranks to lead the organization into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whom Annan had chosen to head the U.N. refugee agency, said in a statement.

Annan and the United Nations shared the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for efforts to reform the world body and give priority to human rights issues.

As head of U.N. peacekeeping operations, Annan was criticized for the world body’s failure to halt the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990s.

SPONSORED

As U.N. boss he was linked to peace efforts to reunite the divided island of Cyprus, submitting a reunification blueprint which was rejected in a referendum by Greek Cypriots in 2004.

‘NOT PERFECT’
He staunchly opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and later served as the first U.N. envoy at the start of Syria’s war, but quit after world powers failed to fulfill their commitments, saying: “I lost my troops on the way to Damascus”.

“The U.N. can be improved, it is not perfect but if it didn’t exist you would have to create it,” he told the BBC’s Hard Talk during an interview for his 80th birthday in April, recorded at the Geneva Graduate Institute where he had studied.

“I am a stubborn optimist, I was born an optimist and will remain an optimist,” added Annan, who often joked about having learned from locals to wear earmuffs against the freezing cold during his undergraduate years at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the United States.

Raila Odinga, Kenyan opposition leader and former prime minister, said on Citizen TV: “We didn’t expect Kofi to pass that abruptly. Kofi Annan is a man of integrity; a great African, a great leader of the world.”

Former U.S. presidents praised Annan.

George W. Bush called him “a gentleman and a tireless leader of the United Nations”, while Barack Obama described him as “a diplomat and humanitarian who embodied the mission of the United Nations like few others”.

“Kofi Annan devoted his life to making the world a more peaceful place through his compassion and dedication to service. He worked tirelessly to unite us and never stopped fighting for the dignity of every‎ person,” U.S. envoy to the U.N. Nikki Haley said.

The Elders, a group of former leaders including Gro Harlem Brundtland and Mary Robinson, paid tribute to their inspiring chairman, noting his visits to South Africa and Zimbabwe in July.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, paid tribute to Annan as “humanity’s best example, the epitome, of human decency and grace”.

Zeid, who has criticized major powers and other countries during his four-year term that ends later this month, said that whenever he felt “isolated and alone politically”, he would go for long walks with Annan in Geneva.

“When I told him once how everyone was grumbling about me, he looked at me — like a father would look at a son — and said sternly: “You’re doing the right thing, let them grumble.” Then he grinned!”

UN Condemns Plateau killings, AI Says FG Encouraging Murderers.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Thursday expressed concern over violent conflicts between farmers and herders in countries across West and Central Africa, particularly the Plateau attacks that claimed the lives of over 86 villagers on Saturday.
But the Amnesty International has said by failing to hold murderers to account, the Federal Government is encouraging impunity that is fuelling rising insecurity across the country.

The Director Amnesty International Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, stated this in a report released by the international agency on Thursday.
AI stated that its independently verified estimated figures indicated that since January 2018 “at least 1,813 people had been murdered in 17 states, which is double the 894 people killed in 2017.”
Ojigho stated, “The death tolls reflect killings as a result of farmers-herders conflict, communal clashes, Boko Haram attacks and banditry“We are gravely concerned about the rising spate of killings across the country, especially the communal clashes between farmers and herders and attacks by bandits across at least 17 states.
“The authorities have a responsibility to protect lives and property, but they are clearly not doing enough going by what is happening.”Ojigho added, “The latest incident in Plateau State, where armed gunmen attacked 11 villages on June 23 for at least seven hours and killed at least 200 villagers without intervention from security forces should be investigated.“That the violence in Plateau started after an attack, which was followed by reprisals from Thursday, June 21 shows unacceptable security lapses.“Despite the deployment of security forces, including the military in over 30 states, the escalation of these attacks shows that whatever is being done by authorities is not working.“There is urgent the need for people who are suspected of committing crimes to be held accountable. We hope that President Buhari’s commitment to bring those suspected to be criminally responsible for the killings in Plateau State to justice will break the impunity that has spread through the country.“In addition, government must answer these questions: who are these attackers, where do they come from, where do they go after attacks, who arms them, why is security forces’ response time very slow?”He explained, “Amnesty International’s investigations show worrying details of how frequently the security forces failed to protect villagers. In all cases Amnesty International investigated, the attackers, usually arriving in their hundreds spend hours killing people and setting houses on fire and then disappeared without a trace.”Amnesty International added that it was investigating the rising insecurity that had resulted in the increase in killings across the country. The agency also expressed concerned about the impact of these killings on farming, especially with the affected villages and farmlands deserted because people fear going back to their homes. We are at the peak of farming season, and communities affected by this wave of violence are largely agrarian. But because of fear of attacks they have either been displaced or unable to cultivate their farms, therefore their major source of food and income threatened by the attacks,” said Osai Ojigho.

The organisation called on the Federal Government to address security lapses that “make it easier for the killers to carry out attacks and disappear.”

“Making arrests and bringing to justice those suspected to be responsible for these attacks are crucial in ending the killings that are gradually turning into almost a daily occurrence. In many instances, these killings happen and no arrests take place,” Ojigho said.

The UN chief however in a statement by his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, on Thursday.  called on all concerned governments, regional organisations, civil society and other relevant actors to work together to find acceptable and lasting solutions to the conflicts.

He spoke a few days after attacks by suspected herdsmen left scores of people dead in Plateau State. Guterres described the trend as being detrimental to regional stability.

He said the UN was ready to support national and regional efforts to resolve disputes between farmers and herders.

The statement read, “The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about the increasing frequency, intensity, complexity and geographic scope of violent conflict between farmers and herders, as well as related banditry, extortion and cattle rustling, in several countries across West and Central Africa.
He condemns the resulting loss of life, property and livelihoods, as well as population displacement, which undermines peaceful coexistence between communities in many of the affected countries. It is also detrimental to regional stability.
The Secretary-General stresses that all attacks targeting civilians violate international humanitarian law.

He urges all concerned governments, regional organisations, civil society and other relevant actors to work together to find acceptable and lasting solutions to these conflicts, in full compliance with existing regional regulatory frameworks and international humanitarian and human rights law.
The Secretary-General expresses the solidarity of the United Nations with the people and governments of the affected countries. He reiterates the readiness and commitment of the United Nations to support national and regional efforts to resolve disputes between farmers and herders, the Presidency on Thursday took a swipe at the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, accusing it of playing irresponsible politics with the latest attacks in Plateau State that left scores of people dead.It said the decision of the PDP to declare seven days of mourning for the killings amounted to dancing on the graves of the dead and playing cheap, infantile politics.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated this in a statement in Abuja.

Adesina said while the PDP which he described as a “comatose and prostrate party” asked that its flag be flown at half -mast nationwide during the period, the party did not know that those flags had been forcefully lowered since its 2015 loss at the polls, and might remain so for a long time to come.

The statement read, “The sad and unfortunate killings in Plateau State over the weekend have been turned to opportunity to once again play irresponsible politics, particularly by the Peoples Democratic Party which says it is declaring seven days of mourning.
These are dolorous times that call for deep introspection on how cheap human lives have become, and the proffering of actionable ideas on how to get out of the bind, but the PDP would rather dance on the graves of the dead, playing cheap, infantile politics.
The comatose and prostrate party is declaring seven days of mourning, during which flags in its offices would be flown at half mast nationwide. But unknown to the party, those flags had been forcefully lowered since its 2015 loss at the polls, and may remain so for a long time to come, because Nigerians are politically discerning, and cannot be hoodwinked by cheap antics.

Presidency lists killings under PDP watch
The presidential spokesman then listed some killings which he described as savage and brutal that took place during the PDP rule between 1999 and 2015 for which no national mourning was declared.
November 20, 1999. Odi, in Bayelsa State which was invaded on the orders of a PDP President, about 2,500 people killed. No national mourning.
Between February and May 2000, about 5,000 people were killed during riots over Sharia law in different parts of the North. No national mourning.
In 2001, hundreds of people, including the old, infirm, women and children were killed in Zaki Biam. No crocodile tears.

Between September 7 and 12, 2001, Jos, Plateau State, erupted in internecine killings. Between 500 and 1,000 people were killed. Flags were not flown at half mast.

In February, 2004, at least 975 people were killed in Yelwa-Shendam, Plateau State. No mourning by the then ruling PDP.

“Between November 28 and 29, 2008, Jos was in flames again, with 381 deaths.  No mourning. In 2010, 992 people killed in Jos. Mum was the word.

In 2014 alone, according to Global Terrorism Index, at least 1,229 people were killed in the Middle Belt. No mourning.

Boko Haram killings in PDP years were over 10,000. PDP flags were still fluttering proudly in the sky,” Adesina added.

The presidential spokesman said the list showed that wanton killings had been with the country for some time.

He said while the present administration was working towards proffering lasting solutions, it should be given the opportunity to do so.

He said those playing politics with tragedies should have a change of heart or lose their humanity.

Those who take pleasure in twisting statements from the Presidency may claim we are saying that many more people were killed under the PDP than under President Muhammadu Buhari. It would be unconscionable to do so.

The intendment of this statement is to show that wanton killings have been with us for awhile (sic); this government is working towards enduring solutions; and should be given the opportunity to do so.
Even a single soul is precious, and no man should take a life, which he cannot create. But when tragic situations as had happened in Plateau State occur, such should never be used to play crude politics.

Those who are wont to do so should have a change of heart, or lose their very humanity,” he concluded.

Show respect for the dead, PDP counsels Buhari
But the PDP, in its reaction, expressed shock by the statement credited to the Presidency. The opposition party said the statement  justified  the Presidency’s alleged failure to stop  killings in Plateau, Zamfara,  Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, Kogi, Taraba and other troubled states.

The PDP said it was indeed reprehensible that the Presidency in its “usual arrogance and insensitivity to the mood of the nation chose to condemn the PDP for declaring a seven-day mourning and flying our flags at half-mast in honour of the dead and solidarity with the bereaved.”
The National Publicity Secretary of the party,  Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, who stated this while reacting to the statement by Adesina, said it was disturbing that even in death, the Buhari Presidency still wanted to deny these victims of callous murder the honour of being mourned.

He said, “The PDP urges the Buhari Presidency to confront the challenge of fulfilling the basic responsibility of governance by providing security for the lives and property of all Nigerians irrespective of their creed, tribe and political affiliations.”

Ohanaeze attacks Buhari
Also, the apex socio-political body of the Igbo, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, described President Buhari’s comparison of the killings in Plateau State to those in Zamfara State as “most unfortunate.”
In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Media and Publicity, Chief Emeka Attamah, on Thursday,  Ohanaeze said “it believes that no human life  is greater than the other and that two wrongs do not make a right.”

Rather than compare the number of casualties, the Federal Government should rejig its security apparatus, stop further killings and appease the families and communities affected by the senseless killings,” the pan-Igbo body said.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed fears that “from the trend of events, it appeared as if General T.Y. Danjuma’s outcry that there was a grand design by some people to carry out ethnic cleansing in the country and that government was colluding with them was justified.”

Ohanaeze called on Buhari to allay the fears of the people, “especially with the double standard being exhibited by the Federal Government in the handling of the issues of IPOB and the suspected Fulani herdsmen.”

The association restated its call on the Federal Government to declare the Miyetti Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, the umbrella body of the herdsmen, as a terrorist organisation, as was done to the Indigenous People of Biafra. While the Federal Government proscribed IPOB, a harmless organisation, Miyetti Allah which has openly claimed responsibility for most of the attacks for just the killing or rustling of their cattle has gone around unscathed.

If government could label IPOB a terrorist organisation, there was no reason the Miyetti Allah, the umbrella body of cattle herders, should not be proscribed and their leaders prosecuted.

If the Federal Government was not being partisan, why the silence on the utterances of Miyetti Allah who also attributed the killing of their cattle in the Benue massacres to their attacks there?

How many suspected  herdsmen have been taken to court for either the killings in the country or for carrying Ak-47 rifles about in the full glare of security operatives, contrary to the provisions of the law,” the statement said.

Sultan’s JNI condemns killings, says attacks orchestrated
However, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll-led Jama’atu Nasril Islam, condemned the killings. The Sultan of Sokoto is the President General of the JNI and the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, an umbrella body of all Nigerian Muslims. The Secretary General of the JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu on behalf of the Sultan, described the incident as “sad” after three years of peaceful coexistence in Plateau State. The group noted with grave concern that after three years of  peace, it was disheartening that such a success story, was about to end.It noted that the recent attacks were well “orchestrated with political and religious mindsets.”The JNI stated, “We also advise that serious security measures should be taken on all the identified villages that have been notorious in causing distress to motorists, particularly in Kaduna and Plateau states.”This, the religious body said, “is informed by the simple fact that most often than not, if per chance a crisis erupts in Plateau and Kaduna states, Muslims are always the soft targets on the Southern Kaduna Road to Jos.”

Governors to meet security chiefs
Also, state governors  under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, will  meet with security chiefs to evolve a holistic solution to insecurity challenges confronting the country. The Chairman of the forum, who is also the Governor of Zamfara State,  Alhaji Abdul’aziz Yari, disclosed this while speaking with journalists after the NGF’s meeting which started on Wednesday night but ended in the early hours of Thursday in Abuja. Yari said that the governors also condemned attacks in Plateau State where scores of Nigerians were killed, and called for the prosecution of the perpetrators. He said, “The forum strongly condemns recent attacks in Plateau State and the spate of insecurity in the country.Members commiserate with the government and people of Plateau and other states, including victims who were caught in transit travelling to and from neighboring states.Governors unanimously called for the prosecution of the perpetrators of the attacks and resolved to find a quick and common solution to the security crises. The forum resolved to pay a condolence visit to Plateau State to commiserate with the government and people of the state.’’

Obaseki commiserates with victims
On his part, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, condemned  the killings and commiserated with the victims. In a statement, the governor, who said that it was regrettable that such wanton attacks could be meted out to fellow countrymen, stressed the imperative for peaceful coexistence and tolerance in curbing conflicts among different groups.   He stated, “The recent killings would weigh on the conscience of any Nigerian, who values human life and stands for peace and progress of our country. I stand with the people of the affected families and local government areas in this sad moment of our history as a people.”

PENGASSAN urges change of security strategy
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria  condemned  killing of innocent Nigerians across the country.
The group, in a statement by its National Public Relations Officer, Fortune  Obi, called on the security agencies to change their strategies of tackling the crisis.
PENGASSAN also criticised a statement by  Meyatti Allah that the killings were in response to rustling of about 100 cattle in Plateau State.
It urged the Federal Government to rise above just condemning such killings and “courageously do all it takes to protect the lives and property of citizens which is the whole essence of governance.”

Wike seeks reordering of security architecture
Also, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, called for the immediate re-jigging of the nation’s security architecture.
Speaking when he received the Management of Businessday Newspaper at the Government House Port Harcourt on Thursday, Wike said that the current approach to national security was no longer functional.
He said, “This time, criminality is targeted at some communities.  Every time, when they kill over a hundred innocent Nigerians, the security agencies claim that three persons have been arrested.
“After the deaths, they announce that Special Forces have been deployed in invaded communities. Will the Special Forces revive the slain persons?
“We must talk of re-jigging the security architecture. The present setting is not yielding results. We must introduce persons with new ideas and new thinking to check the ugly trend of insecurity.”
He regretted that most of his colleagues (governors) were not interested in working for the people as they were more concerned with battling for second term.
According him, some governors rather than stand for the people in terms of the growing insecurity, prefer to hobnob with the President, begging for second term support.
