A lawyer of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mr. Aloy Ejimakor, has dismissed claims that his client had indicated interest to work for the removal of President Muhammadu Buhari from office in next year’s general elections, insisting that self-determination remains the ultimate goal.

This is coming on the heels of claim by a former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, that the controversial IPOB leader wanted by the Nigerian military authorities had given his word to work with like minds to remove President Buhari from office.

“I just received a call from my brother Nnamdi Kanu. I am delighted that he is alive and well. I commend his strength and courage even as I marvel at the loyalty, resilience and commitment of his lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor and IPOB. We have agreed to work together to VOTE Buhari out,” Fani-Kayode had tweeted on Saturday.

But Mr. Ejimakor in a Facebook post after Fani-Kayode’s tweet said; “As Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Special Counsel, he’s been speaking with me from his location in Israel in the past few days.

“I want to make it clear to all that Nnamdi Kanu’s brief chat with Fani Kayode earlier today did not include anything close to agreeing to ‘work together with Fani Kayode to vote out Buhari’, as is being circulated on social media.

“On the contrary, Nnamdi Kanu wants all to know that IPOB remains solidly committed to Self Determination and Referendum; and is therefore not interested in any partisan politics of the moment. I urge all and sundry to take caution and be guided accordingly.”

Mr. Kanu went missing sometime in September 2017 when the military raided his family home in Abia state in which scores of young people were allegedly killed.

Kanu and his group have been calling for a referendum to determine if the mainly Igbo speaking people in the South Eastern part want to remain part of Nigeria.

The group's deputy leader earlier released a statement affirming their strong stand on Self-determination and Biafra Referendum, the statement reads below...

Publication Of Lies Against IPOB And Her Leader, A Direct Consequence Of The Morbid Fear Of Nnamdi Kanu Within The Nigerian Political Circle

October 20, 2018

Our attention has been drawn to some deceptive and crude tactics employed by some politicians to drag the name of our Leader, Nnamdi Kanu to the mud by suggesting that he held talks with such politicians to oust Muhammadu Buhari. We want to use this medium to state unequivocally that at no time did Nnamdi Kanu reached any agreement with any politician to participate in Nigerian politics.

Consequently, any publication not authorised by our leader, his deputy or by the Head Directorate of state regarding IPOB and/or our leader is pedestrian and null and void. Nnamdi Kanu is on a divine mission to restore Biafra and the resolve behind this restoration project remains irrevocable, sacrosanct and irreversible.

Finally, Nnamdi Kanu’s humility and courtesy in appreciating a few individuals and groups in Nigeria for what they did to assist during his incarceration cannot be construed as weakness. We invite you to listen to Nnamdi Kanu as he addresses IPOB family members and the world in general tomorrow 21st October 2018 from the city of Tel Aviv in Israel on the direction of the struggle. It is only after this address that you will advise yourselves accordingly regarding all the lies and propaganda being peddled by the Nigerian media.

Alphonsus Uche Okafor-Mefor,
Deputy Leader, Indigenous People of Biafra [IPOB]
