I woke up last Friday morning to the news of Britain has broken out of European Union (EU) in a referendum called by resigning Prime Minister David Cameron. I was not really intrigued with the news but most of my colleagues of Family Writers were excited, little on the victory of the Britons and mostly on the resignation of the hypocritical David Cameron.
Cameron allowed the will of his people to take preeminence over his political career. In an emotionally laden voice, he spoke to the press outside 10 Downing Street, London, he was proud he delivered a "fair, legal and decisive referendum." According to Cameron, as a Prime Minister he believed that "Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the EU, he conducted the election because of the citizens and not for the future of any single politician, including himself." He conceded defeat to the will of his people and thinks he should not be responsible for steering Britons in the part they have chosen via referendum. He promised to step down as Prime Minister during the conservative conference in October and insisted the will of the people to pull out of European Union must be respected by the losing side, himself included
Watching David Cameron speak was watching an exhibition of bigotry and hypocrisy. It should not be forgotten that Cameron in connivance with President Obama of USA foisted Muhammadu Buhari as President of Nigeria, knowing well enough of his antecedents of dictatorship and tyranny. Biafrans across the world have made phone calls to the British government on the atrocities been committed against them and the need for a peaceful separation from Nigeria but Cameron and his cabinet have ignored those calls. Even with the killing of peaceful Biafran protesters and the continuous incarceration of the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (a British citizen),the British government led by Cameron still insist on respecting the "territorial integrity" of Nigeria because of their urge for oil exploitation.
It is very hypocritical for a government that insists on forcing unity in Nigeria to allow a referendum for his own people. And I am wondering if referendum was created for the white folks alone and war must be used by black men to achieve their quest for self-determination. For the first time in 31 years, the pound sterling collapsed and Britain became the first country to quit in the EU's 60-year history, the most important was that the will of the British people was allowed to be tested. With results in for 350 of the 382 areas that took part across Britain, the result was 52 percent for"Leave" and 48 percent for "Remain".
With the forced amalgamation orchestrated by Frederick Lugard in Nigeria in 1914 which has expired, and 50 years after the Biafra genocide of 1967-1970, Biafrans have been clamoring for their rights to self-determination. The European Union and the incoming British Prime Minister must enlighten President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, on the need to stop shedding innocent human blood and conduct a referendum for Biafrans.
Buhari was quick to congratulate Cameron for been democratic but has continually threatened to drown the country instead of allowing Biafrans have a referendum. Such idiocy! As Scotland gears up for another referendum after Britain voted against majority will expressed by Scots to remain in the EU, the will of Biafrans must also be respected. The Indigenous People of Biafra,IPOB, have officially launched a campaign tagged "BiafrExit" and Biafrans must be allowed to choose their destiny as done by the Britons. A referendum is a right and should not be a privilege for only those with white skin.
