This month, last year, Nigeria lost a great intellectual, activist, leader, and public servant. The world lost a great human being when Oronto Douglas lost a long-fought battle to cancer on April 9, 2015.

At The Trent, we remember Oronto for his wisdom, spirit, love for democracy, and his uncommon courage.

This is video of a speech he gave in the United States on the 22nd of September, 1998 and he was advocating for the rights of his people, the Ijaws over the devastation of their environment and plundering of their natural resources by the big oil companies and the Nigerian government.

The video is more than one hour long, but worth your time if you are interested in an historical and human and environmental rights perspective on the battle in the Niger Delta.
