Youths across the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State on Monday staged a peaceful protest to condemn the continued incarceration of one of the lawmakers in the state, Afolabi Akanni, who represents Efon-Alaaye-Ekiti Constituency in the state assembly.
The youths, under the aegis of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti chapter converged at the popular Fajuyi Park, from where they marched round the major streets of Ado-Ekiti.
The youths, who carried placards with various inscriptions, called for the immediate released of the detained lawmaker.
Some of the placards read: ‘DSS Release Akanni Now’; ‘Nigeria Belongs to All of Us’ and ‘Gov Fayose is Our Man’, among others.
The President, NYCN, Ekiti chapter, Mr Olumide Fasuba, said the continued detention of Akanni without trial was undemocratic, describing it as impunity of the highest order.
“This is a peaceful protest and we are gathered to express our displeasure on the continued detention of our lawmaker, Afolabi Akanni in the DSS custody.
“This demonstration is against the impunity, abduction and detention of our lawmaker; it is Akanni today and can be anybody’s turn tomorrow, it can even be you or me.
“We therefore call for the immediate release of Akanni; he must not die in DSS custody”, Fasuba said.
He reiterated the non-partisan of NYCN, saying the protest was not politically influenced rather a call for justice to prevail.
