- Thousands of IPOB Women shuts down Owerri in a massive protest
- One collapsed, others injured as Police used tear gas to disrupt the peaceful protest
The women wing of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Owerri embarked on a massive protest in Owerri the Capital of Imo State demanding for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide and his aged parents whom had been held incommunicado since September 14th, 2017 when Nigerian Army on presidential directives invaded their residence and whisked them away in a murderous raid.
The IPOB women are demanding for his immediate release because he has stayed incommunicado in detention dungeon of Nigerian Army for too long. As it is at the moment, Owerri Imo State is grounded due to the protest of the IPOB women.
The peaceful protest suddenly took a wrong turn as officials of the Nigerian armed forces used tear gas to disrupt the protest causing injuries, over 70 women have been arrested and reportedly taken to the state CID.
They added that it was not a wrong step for them to demand for a country called Biafra. However, drama ensued when over 100 police officers with their patrol vans went after the women and applied the tactics of tear gassing the women on peaceful protest.
An eyewitness, who gave his name as Kelechi Iheagwoba, told Vanguard that, “As a result of the fierce-looking police officers fully armed who blocked the road for the women, these women diverted to from warehouse junction to Akwakuma.
“Do you know that many of these women fainted and also many of them were bundled into the police vehicles. Some of them were seriously beaten.” One woman was pictured lying on the floor in what seems to be a faint situation.
