Theresa May with husband

Theresa May has officially become Prime Minister and immediately made a bold statement by appointing Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.

Mrs May set to work on Wednesday evening by making several Cabinet appointments, including replacing George Osborne with Philip Hammond as Chancellor.

Amber Rudd took Mrs May's old position as Home Secretary, while Michael Fallon was kept on as Defence Secretary.

David Davis took on the new brief of Minister for Brexit.

After her formal appointment by the Queen, Mrs May promised to lead a "one-nation" government dedicated to social justice and making "Britain a country that works for everyone".

Alluding to the tough negotiations that lie ahead over Britain's exit from the European Union, she said, "we face a time of great national change".

But she said Britain would "rise to the challenge" and forge "a bold new positive role" in the world.

Barack Obama 'expects Theresa May's plans for executing Brexit to align with the president's'
Josh Earnest, President Barack Obama's spokesman, said the White House congratulates Mrs May and expects her plans for executing Brexit to align with the president's.

"Those US officials that have worked with her, found her to be quite effective. And obviously, we congratulate her on the on her new position and on the important responsibility that she will assume," he said.

The President has been quite clear about what he hopes and expects that process [Brexit] will entail, which is an orderly process and a good-faith negotiation between the UK in the EU, which even after that negotiation has been completed, we will still have the important economic relationship

There are obviously broader consequences for the global economy in terms of the way that negotiation is handled. And you know, based on the public comments we've seen from the incoming Prime Minister, she intends to pursue a course that is consistent with the prescription the President Obama has offered.

Given the nature of her previous position as the Home Secretary, she engaged with US officials on a variety of national security issues. So there are US officials like Secretary Johnson even Lisa Monaco here at the White House who have worked with her on issues that are important to the national security of both of our countries.

That's the kind of working relationship you'd expect somebody to have with the United States given the special relationship between our two countries. But those US officials that have worked with her, found her to be quite effective. And obviously, we congratulate her on the on her new position and on the important responsibility that she will assume.
