Portugal beat France to win the Euro 2016 soccer championship at Paris's Stade de France stadium.

Portuguese substitute Eder scored in the 119th minute, in extra time, to give his team a 1-0 win over France, the hosts who were favorites to win the game.

Eder's long-range shot sealed a first-ever major tournament win for Portugal.

The win for Portugal came despite the team losing its captain and talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo, to injury during the match.

Victory was sweet for Ronaldo, who was reduced to tears as a 19-year-old as Portugal lost 1-0 to Greece in the 2004 final.

France had the better chances during the game, but were unable to find a way through the Portuguese defense and its standout goalkeeper, Rui Patricio.
