PMB and OBJ

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to move against former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, over his inability to investigate the gruesome murder of Chief Bola Ige, a former Minister of Justice.

More than a decade after his death, his killers may not go unpunished, as President Buhari during the weekend, instructed the Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris, to re-open investigation into the case.

Sources say the outcome of the investigation, might implicate Obasanjo, who refused to initiate a probe into the killing, which occurred during his tenure as President.

Ige, was shot dead in his bedroom in Bodija, Ibadan at about 9 pm on December 23, 2001, 30 minutes after arriving Ibadan from Lagos.

According to reports, his security details were alleged to have excused themselves to go and eat, before he was murdered, by yet to be known assassins.

After his death, accusing fingers were pointed at some politicians, who may not have been happy with Ige’s growing political profile. Some sources, also claimed that the cause of his assassination might have been connected with his impending probe of the massive corruption in the power sector, which Obasanjo was allegedly involved in.

Aside ordering investigation into Ige’s assassination case, President Buhari, also ordered that the murder of ex-Deputy National Chairman, South-South, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Aminosari Dokubo, who was assassinated near Asaba on October 22, 2004, be looked into.

The two assassinations, which happened during Obasanjo’s administration got Nigerians across political divides, calling for the government to fish out the killers.

However, it was gathered that the Acting IGP, has already instituted a high-powered investigative team to do all they can, to unravel the perpetrators of the unresolved murder cases.

Ige’s son, Architect Muyiwa Ige, who reacted to the development said, “I knew right from the advent of the administration of President Buhari, that the matter would be resurrected. The President is in the right direction. To God be the glory. It’s a new day; we are happy, we will get justice after 16 years.

“We are happy that all those who murdered our father, including the star witness, will be brought to justice. It’s good news”.

  1. We are asking the new administration: How far is the probe going or gone or are we now left to wallow in the euphoria of the announcement, folks?
